Help Further Equality for All Hoosiers in the 2010 Elections
Who is the Indiana Equality Political Action Committee
The Indiana Equality Political Action Committee (IEPAC) is an organization that promotes social welfare and helps to bring about civil equality and social improvement, particularly as they relate to issues of sexual orientation and gender identity. IEPAC is a state political action committee. Under campaign finance laws, IEPAC cannot make endorsements for federal offices (United States Senate, United States Congress, or President).
2010 political landscape
Republicans currently control the Indiana Senate with a 33-17 majority over Democrats. Twenty-five of the 50 Senate seats are up for election this year. Despite private objections from many Senate Republicans, a hearing was conducted this year and subsequent votes were taken on SJR-13, the Marriage Discrimination Amendment, leading to its successful passage from the chamber. Control of the Senate is not expected to change, though Democrats have a reasonable chance of picking up one or two seats.
Democrats currently control the Indiana House of Representatives with a 52-48 majority. All 100 House seats are up for election this year. House Speaker Pat Bauer has been integral in keeping anti-LGBT legislation from moving through the legislative process, most notably, the Marriage Discrimination Amendment. There is a possible scenario that control of the House will switch to the Republicans as a result of this fall’s elections.
How you can be involved in furthering equality for all Hoosiers
IEPAC has been established to elect candidates who will support the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Hoosiers and their families. To help create a more just and fair Indiana, join with IEPAC to:
· Support candidates to office who champion equal rights
· Help ensure that local and state government truly represents the interests of all constituents
· Assist in changing the tone in the State House by electing fair-minded people to the Indiana General Assembly
· Hold accountable any candidate for public office that uses LGBT people, families, or issues as part of a divisive campaign strategy
Can you spare a few hours to help elect fair-minded candidates? Volunteers are needed for data entry, canvassing, phone calling, and more. To volunteer, please contact IEPAC by e-mail at info@iepac.org or by calling 888-567-0750.
